The Trip to the North - Varun's First Day

Image
Varun had a strong aversion to all the usual first-day activities, primarily because he tended to get nervous on such occasions. Traveling from his home, he had to take two buses to reach our college, 'Nivedya College of IT.' Varun's excitement grew as he observed the banners and posters welcoming freshers outside the college. This was also the first time I met Varun. Students were rushing towards the portico where the batch list was displayed. Varun managed to make his way to the front of the crowd and began scanning the list to find his name. My name was not easy to locate as there were five different batches. However, Varun found his name, Varun K Srinivas, in the 'E' batch list. He quickly glanced at the list to see if there were any familiar names. He recognized Ravi Chandran, his schoolmate. We used to affectionately call Ravi "Arnold," not because he resembled Arnold Schwarzenegger, but because he was well-built despite having a single family pack i...

The Trip to the North - Days in college

Our college life was like a classic story, complete with love affairs, breakups, friendly brawls, the "united we stand, divided we fall" motto, skipping classes, the typical teacher-student rivalry, parties, group studies, playing cricket the day before exams, getting caught for copying assignments, pursuing the latest heartthrobs in college, fighting for the most attractive girl in the college, enjoyable tea breaks, paper fights, competing for the last samosas, walking your girlfriend to the bus stop, tedious lectures, assignments, presentations, vivas, bike rides, post- exam trips, flunking exams, and the relief when your friend fails too. We also bunked classes to catch the first-day-first-show of our favorite stars and submitted projects at the last minute. These are things many of you have likely experienced if you've attended college in India. Like many of you had a group at college or a gang, as some might call it, we also had a gang and we called ourselves 'Th...

The Trip to the North !!!!!

Image
This is a story about a friend of mine who embarked on a journey because his parents asked him about his life's purpose. He's quite the film enthusiast and thought he could find his calling by traveling to the North. While I'm not entirely sure if he found his purpose, the journey did change his life, and he returned without reaching the Himalayas. Now, he's working hard at his desk to fund his trip to the Himalayas. About a year ago, I received a call from Varun, and I could immediately sense his distress. I told him to come over, and he arrived at my place within 15 minutes. He seemed angry about something, so I thought discussing it at home might exacerbate the situation. We headed to our usual hangout spot, not far from home, and lit up cigarettes. I began the conversation calmly, asking, "Buddy, what's bothering you?" I had never seen him so angry before, and he burst out, "What do they think of themselves?" I was puzzled and asked, "Wh...

A meaning-'FUL' conversation? Naah some people aint got time for that !

A few hours ago, I received a forwarded message from an old college acquaintance in a group we're part of. The message was related to women's safety and warned against a specific scenario involving a child on the road. The message advised that if you encounter a child crying on the street who shows you an address and requests a ride to that location, you should immediately take the child to the police station rather than the suggested address. The message claimed that this was a new tactic used for criminal activities such as gang rape of women and girls, robbery, and violence against men and boys. It urged recipients to forward the message to all their contacts. I've encountered such messages frequently, as they are a common sight on various social networking platforms. However, I recognized this particular message as a fake, and I wanted to make a point. I responded with, "When people don't even have time to say 'Sorry' or 'Thank you' to strangers...

A Protective Father

The time was approximately 9:15 in the morning, and I was en route to my friend's house. Not in the mood to drive, I had opted for public transportation to reach my destination. While waiting for the bus, I couldn't help but notice many students carrying their books, likely engrossed in last-minute exam preparation. Amidst this scene, my attention was drawn to a father holding his daughter's hand as they patiently awaited the bus. When the bus eventually arrived, albeit running late as usual, I boarded and secured a window seat. To my surprise, the father and his daughter took the seats next to mine. Although I typically kept to myself when traveling, I couldn't resist my curiosity about why he was accompanying his 6th-grade daughter to school, especially when her friends appeared to be traveling independently. Opting for a non-intrusive approach, I initiated a conversation by saying, "Bringing your daughter to school, I see. Do you work near her school or are you ...

Do we need Super-Heroes ?

I am a great fan of Batman and Superman. All these years i have not lost my interest in them just because i wish they were just real. The heroes who always comes to your rescue when you really need them. But then the reality is that we dont have a Bruce Wayne or Clark Kent who would suit up and come to your rescue. All those stories that you have heard and read about them, all those cartoons and movies that you have seen about them, i'm sure that some of you have had dreams of being a super hero like Batman or Superman or a Vigilante who can make the world a better place to live. The fact is that we have heroes in real life who risks their life to help people who are in danger. We have people who do not need a disguise to protect their identity just because they do not consider themselves heroes. People who help others who are in need, people who makes the world a better place to live, people who has talents and uses them to make people happy, people who makes sure that his/her a...

The Alarm Clock in You....

Have you ever thought of getting up early in the morning without the help of an alarm clock? Yes we all do but the fact is we do not succeed more often. And what we all usually do is set an alarm 5-10 minutes prior to the time we need to wake up and press the snooze button so that we get 5 more minutes back in the bed :P.  So it was 4 years ago that i came over this method, and it was explained by one of my teacher from college. The very day i was eager to try it but then i forgot to try it for some time. Later when the exams came up i decided to give it a try and yes it did work perfectly. It was one hell of a miracle for me coz i never get up early even if the alarm buzzes me, at times i dont even hear it :P.  So here it is, the method is as simple as it is. Before you go to sleep, check the time and off to the bed you go after turning off the lights. Now laying down on the bed imagine your wall clock in your mind and imagine the hour and minute hand to be positioned at the ...
