In the serene town of Kavalapara nestled amid the lush greenery of Kerala, there lived a young man named Aditya. From the outside, his life appeared ordinary, but beneath the surface lay a tumultuous struggle that threatened to consume him. Aditya grappled with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), a relentless force that dictated every aspect of his existence. Each day was a battle against intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviors. From arranging his belongings in precise order to repeatedly checking locks and switches, Aditya's life was a series of rituals aimed at staving off the anxiety that plagued him. Despite his efforts to hide his struggles, Aditya's OCD was often visible to those around him. He became the subject of whispers and stares, ostracized by a society that couldn't understand the torment he endured. Even his family, though well-meaning, struggled to comprehend the depth of his anguish. As Aditya grew older, he longed for escape from the suffocating confi...

Shrouded Betrayals

In the tranquil coastal town of Alappuzha, Kerala, a story of deception and betrayal began to unfold. Dev, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer known for his sharp intellect and unwavering commitment to the law, found his principles tested in ways he could never have imagined. Alappuzha, where the serene backwaters met the Arabian Sea, was a haven for its residents. In this picturesque setting, Dev and his steadfast friend and colleague, Raghavan, served as the guardians of peace. Their friendship was built on shared experiences and mutual goals, creating a seemingly unbreakable bond. Raghavan, a devoted husband and a respected police officer, appeared to have a life others envied. However, beneath his facade lay a dark secret that would soon turn their world upside down. One evening, the atmosphere in their quiet police station grew heavy with tension. Raghavan approached Dev with visible anxiety, his hands trembling and his voice quivering. "Dev, I need your help. I'v...

Questions Questions and lots of Questions

Shortly after completing your primary education, the inevitable question arises, "What's next, my boy?" This marks the beginning of a series of questions. Upon finishing your higher secondary education, the next question comes, "Engineering or Medical?" The confused kid looks at their parents, who smile broadly and say, "Do whatever you wish, my boy." However, if you dare to suggest anything other than these two well-trodden paths, chaos ensues. Life takes a significant turn when you enter college. Everyone is in pursuit of grades, especially in the first year. They reassure you that you can relax in the second year, but the relentless race for grades continues. Once college days are over, people start bombarding you with questions like, "What's next?" "What's your percentage?" "Didn't you get placed in XYZ company? You know that kid from who-knows-where got placed and is making an awesome package." And once yo...

The Trip to the North - Varun's First Day

Image
Varun had a strong aversion to all the usual first-day activities, primarily because he tended to get nervous on such occasions. Traveling from his home, he had to take two buses to reach our college, 'Nivedya College of IT.' Varun's excitement grew as he observed the banners and posters welcoming freshers outside the college. This was also the first time I met Varun. Students were rushing towards the portico where the batch list was displayed. Varun managed to make his way to the front of the crowd and began scanning the list to find his name. My name was not easy to locate as there were five different batches. However, Varun found his name, Varun K Srinivas, in the 'E' batch list. He quickly glanced at the list to see if there were any familiar names. He recognized Ravi Chandran, his schoolmate. We used to affectionately call Ravi "Arnold," not because he resembled Arnold Schwarzenegger, but because he was well-built despite having a single family pack i...

The Trip to the North - Days in college

Our college life was like a classic story, complete with love affairs, breakups, friendly brawls, the "united we stand, divided we fall" motto, skipping classes, the typical teacher-student rivalry, parties, group studies, playing cricket the day before exams, getting caught for copying assignments, pursuing the latest heartthrobs in college, fighting for the most attractive girl in the college, enjoyable tea breaks, paper fights, competing for the last samosas, walking your girlfriend to the bus stop, tedious lectures, assignments, presentations, vivas, bike rides, post- exam trips, flunking exams, and the relief when your friend fails too. We also bunked classes to catch the first-day-first-show of our favorite stars and submitted projects at the last minute. These are things many of you have likely experienced if you've attended college in India. Like many of you had a group at college or a gang, as some might call it, we also had a gang and we called ourselves 'Th...

The Trip to the North !!!!!

Image
This is a story about a friend of mine who embarked on a journey because his parents asked him about his life's purpose. He's quite the film enthusiast and thought he could find his calling by traveling to the North. While I'm not entirely sure if he found his purpose, the journey did change his life, and he returned without reaching the Himalayas. Now, he's working hard at his desk to fund his trip to the Himalayas. About a year ago, I received a call from Varun, and I could immediately sense his distress. I told him to come over, and he arrived at my place within 15 minutes. He seemed angry about something, so I thought discussing it at home might exacerbate the situation. We headed to our usual hangout spot, not far from home, and lit up cigarettes. I began the conversation calmly, asking, "Buddy, what's bothering you?" I had never seen him so angry before, and he burst out, "What do they think of themselves?" I was puzzled and asked, "Wh...
